the Flaming Lips forthcoming ‘Embryonic’ to be 2xLP, awesome.

With Coyne referring to the new Embryonic 2xLP as a “freak-out” I can only hope that it’s a masterful psychedelic Lips adventure.  And according to a recent Billboard interview, the Lips have “written 13 tracks, with eight or nine to go,” and Coyne adds that he thinks “with this [Emryonic] there was an element of accidentally stumbling upon more spontaneous sort of freak-out stuff,” and “some of my favorite records – thinking Beatles ‘White Album,’ Zeppelin’s ‘Physical Graffiti’ and even some of the longer things that the Clash have done – part of the reason I like them is that they’re not focused. They’re kind of like a free-for-all and go everywhere.”

Various sources (including Coyne himself, Stereogum, Pitchfork, and Billboard) have made educated guesses that Embryonic is going to sound a lot different than Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and At War With The Mystics, and I’m quite pleased to hear this, as I’m ready for the Lips to head in a different direction.

Speaking of different directions…

..elsewhere in the Flaming Lips world…

Here’s that trippy song the Lips recorded for the Know Your Mushrooms documentary.
